COMPELLING AND CLASSIC BAROLO

Fratteli Alessandria is among the most historic producers of Barolo and, like their neighbor and cousins at G.B. Burlotto, these two estates have revitalized the greatness of Barolos from the Verduno region. Today Verduno is experiencing a renaissance and it is the brothers Alessandria who are guiding the wines of Verduno back to the heights they once held. It is, of course, a family affair—the brothers Gian Battista and Alessandro, and Alessandro’s son, Vittore, are the stewards of this generations-old estate. This past April, I sat with Vittore and tasted his 2015 Barolos, which are among their finest ever.

The wines always offer a complexity without a heaviness; structure with finesse. The Alessandria family provides a mirror to the landscape. These are among my favorite Barolos of this stunning vintage and the wines are still among the best-priced Barolos. Production is small, and we have very limited quantities!” – Lance Montalto, The Wine House

“Fratelli Alessandria is one of Piedmont's under the radar jewels. The Alessandrias make compelling, classically-built wines from estate vineyards in Verduno and Monforte d'Alba. Best of all, the wines remain very reasonably priced by today's standards. Readers who enjoy structured, age-worthy Barolos won't want to be without these wines.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous

94 Points: “From one of the stars of Verduno, Fratelli Alessandria, the 2015 Barolo is a beautifully elegant and compact wine at first. Give it a few moments in the glass, and the wine opens beautifully to reveal polished and detailed tones of wild berry, cassis, licorice and tar. All of this is followed by a delicate floral signature of violets and roses that accompany the wine from start to finish. This vintage is elegant yet voluptuous at the same time.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (June 2019)

93 Points: “Classic Nebbiolo aromas of rose, violet, menthol and perfumed berry come together in the glass. Taut and elegant, the savory palate doles out mature Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, star anise and a hint of tobacco while fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide support. Drink through 2025.” – Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (December 2019)

96 Points: “Enticing scents of pipe tobacco, wild berry, pressed rose and eucalyptus form the nose along with whiffs of new leather. Juicy, savory and structured, the enveloping palate boasts loads of finesse, doling out succulent black cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and mocha. It's already approachable but will offer years of pleasure thanks the fruit richness, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Drink through 2027.” – Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (December 2019)

94 Points: “Showing an immediately ripe and saturated quality of fruit, the 2015 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno is a child of the warm 2015 vintage. The bouquet leaves you no doubt. This wine offers a rich and exuberant approach with dark fruit nuances that cede slowly to spice, tar and black licorice. This Barolo shows depth and dark fruit, both in abundance. The quality of the tannins is still a bit rigid and less integrated at this young stage in the wine's life. You'll need to wait longer to truly enjoy these results.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (June 2019)
2015 Fratelli Alessandria Gramolere Barolo

Release Price: $80
Wine House: $59.99
Magnum: $136.99
Only 24 standard bottles & 2 Magnums available

95+ Points: “The 2015 Barolo Gramolere (with fruit from Monforte d'Alba) opens to a medium-dark ruby color. When you put the wine to your lips, you immediately feel the power, structure and inner fiber of Nebbiolo as interpreted in this two-hectare parcel with its 30-year-old vines. In fact, this wine is defined by that immediate firmness. The aromas, however, are softer and more yielding with forest fruit, wild berry, crushed slate and blue flower. I would suggest putting this wine aside for five more years at least.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (June 2019)

93 Points: “Wild berries, purple flowers, dark spices and a whiff of camphor take shape in the glass. On the taut palate, tightly wound, fine-grained tannins support dried cherry, blood orange, licorice and tobacco. It's still youthfully austere, so give it a few more years to unwind and fully develop.” – Kerin O’Keefe (December 2019)

96 + Points: “Monvigliero in the Verduno township is quickly becoming one of the most celebrated and talked about crus in Barolo. The Fratelli Alessandria estate was among the first to understand its potential, and indeed, this wine was first released in 1978. Fast forward to today and you will find that the 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is an absolutely classic interpretation that stays faithful to past incarnations. The wine offers pretty berry aromas intermingled with spice, licorice and crushed stone. A floral aroma of red rose also appears. The tannins are solid and will require extra years of bottle aging.” – Monica Larner, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (June 2019)

96 Points: “From one of the most celebrated vineyards in the denomination, this opens with alluring aromas of rose, menthol, perfumed berry, pine forest and new leather. Structured and loaded with finesse, the compelling palate delivers juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and cinnamon along with crushed mint. Tightly knit, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide age worthy support and tension. Drink 2023–2040.” - Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast (December 2019)
